5,695 Black Country families out of gas and electric on Christmas Day

New figures show that 5,695 families across the Black Country had to rush to the shops to top up pre-paid gas and electric meters to cook their Christmas Dinner.

Research by Ian Austin MP shows hard-pressed families had to use PayPoint which offers top up services in small shops.

The Dudley North MP says it shows families are struggling to keep up with fuel bills, forcing them to top up on Christmas Day.

Ian Austin said:

“Thousands of local families are finding it so hard to keep up with fuel bills that they had to rush to the shops so they could cook their Christmas dinner.

“Annual energy bills have gone up by £300 a year since 2010, and I know this has made it harder for many people in the Black Country to make ends meet and keep their homes warm.

“I want the government to introduce an energy price freeze to help working families with their bills, but they’re not taking action.”
