Assurances sought on future of Gornal post office

Dudley MP Ian Austin and Gornal Councillor Stuart Turner are seeking assurances that people in Gornal will not lose access to a post office.

Until recently the post office on The Straits in Gornal was run as a private business as part of the News Express convenience store, but its future is now in danger as the franchise holder has handed in their notice. Without further action the post office is set to close at the end of January.

Post Office bosses are looking at whether the branch can be kept open or an alternative location can be found, but a lengthy temporary closure is possible.

Ian Austin and Cllr Turner have now written a joint letter to the Chief Executive of the Post Office urging him to avoid a temporary closure and meet their obligation to keep 90 per cent of local people within one mile of their nearest post office.

Ian Austin said:

“We have already been in touch with lots of people on The Straits who are concerned that their post office could be closed for some time.

“We’re working for local residents and urging the Post Office to keep the branch open.”

Stuart Turner said:

“I know that local people rely on this service to collect their pensions and keep in touch with loved ones.

“We’ll be working hard to speak up for residents and keep disruption to a minimum.”
