Austin backs 48 hour pledge for GP appointments

Dudley MP Ian Austin has called for patients to be guaranteed a GP appointment within 48 hours to address local concerns about long waits.

Recently released national figures show that 60% of patients do not get to see their GP within 48 hours, and that millions face a wait of up to a week or longer.

Austin is calling for a tough target for patients to be seen by their GP within 48 hours or the same day for urgent cases, supported by £100 million of existing NHS funding.

Ian Austin said:

“I recently asked thousands of local residents about GP appointments after hearing from yet another constituent forced to wait for weeks.

“Six in then told me that things were getting more difficult to make an appointment and just two in ten had a local surgery that opened on early mornings or weekends.

“The Tories wasted £1.1 billion on NHS bureaucracy. We need to put patients first with a target to see everyone within 48 hours.”
