Ian Austin is urging the Government to provide compulsory subsidised swimming lessons for children aged 3-10.
The Dudley North MP has signed the petition “Compulsory Subsidised Swimming Lessons for Children in the UK” to give all children equal opportunities of learning to swim and develop a good knowledge of water safety.
The third most common cause of accidental death in the UK for children is drowning, which is preventable by providing free learning opportunities for all children, that are compulsory.
Between 2015-2016, the number of people in the UK who drowned rose by 25%, while drownings in canals and lakes rose by 24%, (Local Government Association 2017, National Water Safety 2017).
Ian Austin Said:
“It’s shocking to learn that 400 children drown accidentally every single year in the UK and it shows why all children should have the opportunity to learn how to swim competently.
“I am really alarmed by statistics that show
“Quarries, lakes and reservoirs can all be dangerous and for an area like ours, with so many canals as a legacy of our industrial heritage, knowing how to swim can be a life-saver."
