Austin backs plan to tackle rip-off rents

Dudley MP Ian Austin has backed plans to help those renting their homes privately.

Census figures show that 5,081 households in Dudley rent privately. The National Housing Federation estimates that private rents will rocket by 39 per cent over the next six years.

Austin is calling for a ban on letting agents’ fees for tenants, saving renters an average of £350 in costs, and for standard tenancies to be extended to three years to give renters long-term certainty.

Ian Austin said:

“Dudley families who are renting their house have told me they face rip-off letting fees and rents that can jump up from one year to the next.

“The government’s not taking action, but families need long-term security so I want to ban massive letting fees and make three-year tenancies the standard.”
