Austin backs tougher laws on sex selective abortion

Dudley North MP Ian Austin has voted in support of tougher laws against sex selective abortion.

MPs voted in favour of the Ten Minute Rule Bill that aims to clarify the illegality of abortions on the grounds of gender.

Currently abortion clinics are required to recognise the illegality of the practice as part of the licensing conditions, but MPs are calling for extra safeguards to tackle an estimated 1,400 sex selective abortions in the UK.

Ian Austin said:

“Sex selective abortion is completely wrong, and we need to be clear that it’s unacceptable at home or abroad.

“Any measure that helps eliminate this practice in the UK deserves our support, so I’m backing this move to toughen the law.”
