Austin calls on the Government to end cruel puppy trade

Dudley MP Ian Austin has called on the government to impose an immediate ban on the sale of puppies by pet shops and other third party commercial breeders.

Austin is backing Lucy’s Law, which seeks to tackle irresponsible dog breeding practices such as puppy farming, smuggling and trafficking to ensure that dogs are only available from licensed, regulated breeders or approved re-homing organisations.

The law will help to protect dogs and puppies by making breeders more accountable, ensuring purchasers are shown puppies interacting with their mothers before sale.

Ian Austin said:

“Every year I hear terrible stories of dogs and puppies being treated cruelly and inhumanely for trade.

“I want the government to crack down on the practices which leads to the unfair treatment of animals.

“I’ll be backing Lucy’s Law and I hope to see a ban on pet shops and commercial dealers irresponsibly selling puppies.”
