Dudley MP Ian Austin has called on the government to tackle the illegal Christmas puppy trade.
An investigation by charity Dogs Trust has revealed that the number of illegally imported puppies surges before Christmas with serious concerns for the welfare of the dogs involved.
Illegally imported puppies often arrive from Hungary and Lithuania in appalling conditions and without the correct vaccinations that protect British dogs from serious disease.
Austin is urging local people to be vigilant for illegally traded dogs that could land their owners a fine, and has written to the Environment Secretary Liz Truss asking her to crack down on the trade.
Ian Austin said:
“Every year we hear the message that dog is for life, not just for Christmas.
“I’m urging local people who are buying puppies this Christmas to be vigilant for dogs that haven’t been treated properly.
“In the long-run I want the government to crack down on this practice which leads to so many injured and abandoned animals.”
