Austin joins supermarket food collection

Dudley MP Ian Austin will be asking shoppers to donate items from their weekly shop when he takes part in a food collection at Tesco this Friday.

Austin will be at Tesco Extra, Town Gate Retail Park, Birmingham Road, DY1 4RP on Friday 4th December at 11:45am.

The collection in Dudley is being organised jointly by Trussell Trust and Fare Share and will be one of hundreds taking place at stores across the country between 3rd – 5th December. Goods collected by Austin and volunteers will be distributed by local community groups and charities and given to people in need.

With budgets squeezed to such an extent that even working families are being forced to turn to food banks, Austin has praised charities for getting food to those people who need it but demands more needs to be done.

Ian Austin said:

“Families here in Dudley are still really struggling to make ends meet. Even though food banks do brilliant work helping people feed themselves and their families, more needs to be done to ensure people do not need to use them.

“With budgets remaining tight people should not have to choose between heating their houses or putting food on the table.

“The Government clearly needs to do more to give support to the millions of ordinary people who are struggling to get by.”
