Dudley MP Ian Austin is helping establish a new Parliamentary group to support the role of magistrates in the local community.
The new All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Magistracy will work to build cross-party support for local community justice. The Group will cover a range of areas, from youth justice to family courts.
Austin recently presented a petition of 2,000 signatures to Parliament against court closures in Dudley. Currently the Government’s preferred plan is to close Dudley’s criminal courts, but local justice officials have recently announced a review of the proposals.
Austin is calling for other local MPs of all parties to join the group and support local courts.
Ian Austin MP said:
“I’ve met with many local magistrates to hear about the work they do. It’s thanks to them that people in Dudley can see justice being done in their local community, rather than elsewhere.
That’s why I’ve been campaigning to save local courts, and why we’ve received huge support, with over 2,000 residents signing our petition.
“I’m joining this group to promote the work of magistrates in delivering local justice. I hope all local MPs will join me in this new group to help raise awareness of the important role that magistrates play.”
