Austin slams Government on detention centre escapes

Dudley MP Ian Austin has slammed the Government for failing to track down 11 escaped illegal immigrants that are on the run.

The MP, who is a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, has revealed official figures showing that 19 people have escaped from Immigration Removal Centres in the past four years.

That figure includes 11 that remain at large and two that are classed as “high harm” and may pose a risk to the public.

Austin has written to the Home Secretary Theresa May urging her to bring the escapees into custody and give a full explanation of the failings.

Ian Austin said:

“We need to know how this was allowed to happen and what’s being done to find these people. David Cameron talks tough on immigration but this is proof that he is failing.

“On his watch the UK Border Agency has lost 6,500 staff and the number of people stopped for border checks has halved since 2010.

“We need tough rules on who is allowed to come and tough checks to make sure they’re enforced. That means strict entrance tests and border controls that more than 7 in 10 local people told me they backed.”
