Austin: Vote to scrap the Bedroom Tax now

Dudley MP Ian Austin has urged MPs from all parties to vote to scrap the Bedroom Tax in a House of Commons vote on Wednesday.

The Bedroom Tax is charged to low-income families that live in social housing with a spare room and costs an average of £700 a year. Two thirds of those hit by the policy have disabilities and 60,000 are carers.

The most recent figures for August 2014 show that 15,329 families in the Black Country and the Staffordshire Council area have been hit by the measure, with many falling into rent arrears.

Austin has previously voted to protect vulnerable people from the Bedroom Tax in Parliament and will be voting for the measure to be scrapped completely tomorrow.

Ian Austin said:

“I have heard from lots of local people hit by the Bedroom Tax here in Dudley.

“The Bedroom Tax means they can’t afford the rent and want size down, but there just aren’t any smaller properties for them to move to.

“I’m voting to scrap this failing policy once and for all, and I want MPs from all parties to do the same.”
