Austin welcomes arrests over scam websites

Dudley MP Ian Austin has welcomed the arrest of five people in the crackdown over hoax government websites.

The misleading websites have been charging people for free government services. The scams demanded fees for routine tax return, passport and driving license applications.

Following complaints from local residents Austin has asked the Home Affairs Select Committee of which he is a member to conduct a full investigation.

Ian Austin said:

“I’m really pleased that five people have been arrested but the Government needs to do more to protect people from falling victim to these scams.”

“It’s not right that hard working people in the black country who are planning their holidays are being hit with these fees when they are looking to renew their passports. This is why I am asking the Home Affairs Select Committee to conduct a full investigation.”
