Hands off Lister Road park, Austin tells council

MP meets residents angry over plans to build on park

Dudley North MP Ian Austin is urging Dudley Council to drop plans to turn a local park into a car park.

Austin is due to meet residents at Lister Road tomorrow (Friday) at 4.30 to discuss Dudley Council’s plans to turn a local park and football pitches into a car park for over 200 cars.

The council has drawn up plans for the new car park as part of the redevelopment of its depot at Lister Road, but Austin says it will deprive youngsters and sports teams of popular pitches, whilst residents who currently look out over the park will be faced with a car park instead.

Austin has written to the council to object to the plans and is urging residents to do the same.

He is also asking Sport England, the Football Association and Active Black Country, the local partnership responsible for boosting participation in sport, to oppose the plans.

Ian Austin said:

“I’m telling Dudley Council to get their hands off the sports pitches and open space at Lister Road.

“Residents have told me that they are horrified about plans to replace their park with a car park.

“It has been public open space for as long as anyone can remember and it is well used by local football teams and people in the area.

“There is a childhood obesity crisis and here we have a local council planning to concrete over sports facilities.”
