Improvements to tackle Gornal dangerous bend move closer

Dudley MP Ian Austin has welcomed the release of council plans to tackle a dangerous bend in Gornal.

Dudley Council has released plans which if approved would introduce new warning signs, road markings and extended kerbs along the bend

Local Gornal resident Diane Whittaker contacted Austin to raise concerns about accidents and near misses on the bend where Church Street and Temple Street meet in Upper Gornal. She and other residents reported that cars were hitting the old stone wall outside St Peter and the English Martyrs Church as often as once a week.

A petition launched by Austin, Labour Councillors Stuart Turner and Dave Branwood attracted 500 signatures in a matter of weeks.

Ian Austin said:

“Anyone who travels down the Church Street from Five Ways to Gornal Village will know that the bend by the Catholic Church is really dangerous, especially for people who aren’t local and don’t know the road.

“Thanks to local residents and campaigners Dudley Council has listened to concerns and I’m pleased we are now seeing plans for significant improvements along the bend to make it safer for everyone.”
