MP backs fair taxi charges for wheelchair users

Dudley MP Ian Austin is calling on the government to ban taxis from charging extra to carry wheelchair users.

Disability groups say that equality law needs to be strengthened to tackle widespread overcharging to passengers with wheelchairs.

Investigations have found that taxi firms in Nottingham, Hull, Middlesbrough and a number of other areas have all been taking part in the practice.

Austin has written to the Equalities Minister Nicky Morgan urging them to enforce the Equalities act to ensure that wheelchair users pay the same fares as others.

Ian Austin said:

“I’ve talked to disabled people in Dudley about access to taxis and I’m disappointed to hear some taxis are putting up their prices for passengers with a wheelchair.

“The fare for a larger cab should be the same for everyone, so I’m pressing the government to strengthen the law.”
