Dudley MP Ian Austin has opened an account with Dudley’s Castle & Crystal Credit Union to donate the MPs’ pay rise to local good causes.
Before the election Austin said the announcement of a pay rise for MPs as “completely bonkers” and pledged to give the extra cash to organisations in Dudley should they go ahead.
The MP has now established a ‘good causes’ account with Castle & Crystal Credit Union, the community bank based at New Street in Dudley town centre that has helped hundreds of residents with affordable loans. The account will collect the proceeds of the pay rise and be used to support local community groups, charities and good causes.
He has given away hundreds of pounds already and will be donating the rest over the course of the year. Most of it will go to organisations improving education and opening up opportunities for young people in Dudley.
Ian Austin said:
“I’ve always said that plans to give MPs a pay rise are completely bonkers, and I’m keeping my promise that when times are tough for so many local families I will use this money to increase my support for good causes and organisations in Dudley instead.
“I’ve made a lot of small donations already but the bulk of it will go to support organisations working with young people in Dudley, particularly those involved in improving education or opening up opportunities for young people which I think has to be the town’s number one priority.”
